Celebrating 40 Events for 40 Years

Hi everyone,

We have some plans to celebrate in a BIG way in 2014. Not all details are finalised yet but put these dates in your diary, and some events still to be arranged – so we hope there will be something that suits your family.

Calendar 2014 v2 1Calendar 2014 v2 2

Check who is organising each event as some events are coordinated by the hospital teams.   Many of the events are to be confirmed so keep your eye on our website (heartchild.info/events) and Facebook page (heartchild.info/facebook), get in touch with your local branch, call our helpline or email us for more details.

Free events are those where we only pay for those who arrive on the day.  For events where we pay in advance you will be required to pay before the event so we are not left out of pocket.

Please bring your unwanted gifts for use as prizes.

National AGM at Chester Zoo

On the 1st June 2013 we held this year’s National AGM at Chester Zoo. The weather was good and it was fantastic to see so many members attending for one of the biggest turnouts we’ve had in a few years.

To begin the day we all met at the lecture theatre just outside the zoo for the business portion of the meeting. The agenda was kept short as what everybody was really looking forward to getting into the zoo for lunch and to see the animals. Anne gave her report of the past year, which has seen growth in members as well as those looking for support via our Facebook page.  Anne thanked the Committee, our Working Groups and our members and supporters who have made this last year such a success for the Association.  All committee members were re-elected.

One of the new things we’re setting up this year are Support Groups.  These allows families to get together for mutual support under the banner of the Association but who aren’t local to the Liverpool or Manchester branches.  As you can see from our member map, we have members from throughout the Northwest and beyond.  One major advantage of the Support Group is that it doesn’t need the complexities of a branch such as bank accounts and a full committee and leaves the Support Group to concentrate on helping each other with mutual support, events and fund-raising.  We hope this simplification will allow the Association to set up new groups in areas away from the Liverpool and Manchester centres.  In order for Support Groups to become a reality we need to make some changes to our constitution.  Chris gave a short presentation on the changes and we are to vote these changes through in an EGM that will be held in a few weeks time.

Finally, the branches each gave a short report on their activities over the past year.  Manchester has been holding regular meetings at the hospital to engage with the staff and new parents on the ward.  Liverpool is continuing to thrive with monthly meetings at Ronald MacDonald House at Alder Hey and lots of events and fund raising with book stalls, charity shops and more.  Oldham and Tameside branch has been inactive this past year with their main fund-raising event, the Saddleworth Beer Walk organised by the Saddleworth Round Table, not taking place.

With the meeting drawn to a close it was time to head into the zoo for some fun.  Here are a few of the photos from our members and there are more on our Facebook page.

We hope to see you again at next year’s AGM and at some of the events we hold throughout the year too!

Saddleworth Beer Walk

This year the Beer Walk took place on Saturday, 5th June and once again the Oldham/Tameside Branch took part in it. Members and friends donned fancy dress and prepared themselves for the ten mile walk and the ten halves of beer to be downed en-route. The weather was dull but it was quite a pleasant day for a walk over the hills and there were plenty of people out from the Saddleworth villages to support the walkers.

This year we had 21 walkers and they managed to collect £608.66 in their cans. At this point we ought to mention Dave Schofield as he collected the grand total of £141.57 all by himself. When his cans were opened they were found to contain large amounts of pound coins and silver ones. We don’t know how he manages it but we are very grateful that he does.

After the Walk we all headed for ‘The Clarence’ at Greenfield for a pie supper. A hot meal and a chance for a sit and a chat are always appreciated at the end of the Beer Walk day. It is also a good chance to catch up on all the news and enjoy a social occasion.

It is November now and time for the final tally of the Beer Walk accounts. After expenses we have made a profit of £909 this year.

Thank you to everyone for taking part in the walk, collecting and raising money through sponsorship. Once again you have made the event a very successful fund raising one and we hope that you also managed to enjoy yourselves at the same time!

Oldham and Tameside branch Christmas Meal

The meal at Phoenix City in Stalybridge on January 24th went very well and everyone enjoyed the evening. The food was of a high standard and the service was excellent. The restaurant celebrated birthdays by playing ‘Happy Birthday To You’ and presenting a cake with a candle to blow out. As Damien had celebrated his birthday the previous week, Alice made sure he got the chance to be serenaded and blow out the candles.

Thank You for Your Memories

josephA big thank you to Joseph Flitcroft, the father of one of our members. Last year Joseph wrote a small book about his memories growing up in Millbrook and Stalybridge in Greater Manchester, and some of his memories of the war. Joseph has donated proceeds from his book to the Association, currently totalling over £230. For more information about the book, or to request a copy (at £3.50 each), please email the Association.

Saddleworth Beer Walk

The Annual Saddleworth Beerwalk took place on Saturday 25th May 2002. The Association had a total of 39 walkers taking part, a pleasant increase on the numbers from recent years, so we hope to have raised a good amount of money for the Association. Final figures are still not available, however, they will follow soon, along with photographs of the event.
