If you or your child’s care is with the adult congenital heart service in the North West wherever that may be currently provided (Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool or Wrexham) then please read this.
NHS England has chosen to move the adult cardiac surgery to Liverpool. (Click here for the MRI response) This will be a slow process as the new service is built. Many people won’t notice the change, until the time for a surgical intervention comes, as their outpatient care should carry on as usual at the hospital closest to them.
The process of recruiting to the new North West service – both in Liverpool level 1 and at the Manchester level 2+ centres is underway. There is an interim arrangement with Leeds and Newcastle surgical centres who are taking care of patients who need surgery imminently. There is help available with the costs of getting to these places where needed.
There are not the usual number of outpatient appointments taking place at the moment. If you are worried that you should have had an appointment please ring your hospital to check when your appointment might happen.
If you become ill and need cardiology treatment PLEASE phone the nurse specialist helpline and they can coordinate your care. They can speak to the team looking after you and make sure your care is tailored around you. It may mean being transferred to Manchester or further afield but the team want to be able to help you. You might have to argue with your local hospital – some believe there is no longer a service at MRI for adults.
Please phone 0161 276 7959 during working hours. Leave a message and the nurses will reply as soon as they can.
If you need help urgently out of hours call the MRI hospital switchboard 0161 276 1234 and ask for the specialist registrar on call for cardiology.
MRI have produced a Q&A sheet which might be useful to show if you are having problems
